Muhammad al-Khwarizmi

Restoring missing pieces of an equation, step by step.

A short story

He worked at a great library in Baghdad called the House of Wisdom, where scholars from many places met to translate and share ideas. He wrote a book about al-jabr (restoring missing pieces of an equation) that gave us the word algebra. The word algorithm, the step-by-step recipes computers follow, also comes from his name.

In their own words

I have composed a short work on calculation by completion and balancing, for what people most need in their affairs.

Paraphrased: opening of al-Khwarizmi's Kitab al-Jabr, c. 820.
