How steep is a curve at one single point?
A short story
He was sent home from university when an outbreak closed it down and, with nothing else to do for almost two years, invented a brand-new kind of mathematics for studying how things move and change. He called his method fluxions. We now call it calculus. Around the same time, far away in Germany, someone else was inventing it too.
In their own words

Newton, letter to Robert Hooke, 1675.
